Project Grants
The Rural Development Center provides grants to businesses and organizations on the Lower Eastern Shore. The funds support business startup, expansion and conversion. The RDC also provides technial assistance to private firms, public agencies and non-profit groups. These funds help local organizations carry out special projects that benefit the economy and maintain a special quality of life. Public agencies receive funding for economic development projects.

The RD Center has funded the pre-development costs and startup costs for the development of a Maryland Capital Enterprises a micro-loan program by Working Capital Delaware for the Eastern Shore through a grant from the Rural Business-Cooperative Service, USDA and Delaware-Maryland Rural Development, USDA.

The RD Center funded, developed and maintains 3 "state-of-art" internet sites with graphics, text, charts and photos for the four lower shore counties, municipalities, economic development departments, tourism, continuing events with links to federal, state, UMES, and private home pages on the Internet. skipjack.net, smartmove.org and chesapeakebiz.org are funded through grants from the Economic Development Administration and the Rural Business-Cooperative Service, USDA. The Center is a cooperator with RB-CS, USDA 1890 Initiative for Bisnet an Internet Web site for information for business development.

The RC Center jointly funded with Bell Atlantic and Conectiv a economic development promotional CD-ROM for MD First Congressional District 10 counties.

| The RD Center received a RB-CS, USDA grant for the cooperative assistance to assist the Smith Island Crabmeat Cooperative located in the Chesapeake Bay which was formed with technical assistance form the Center and with RD USDA funding (see Farmer Cooperative magazine November, 1995) to expand into other ventures i.e. rockfish preparation. Additional assistance is for the development of a grape grower/winery cooperative with the Maryland Grape Growers Association and a feasibility study and educational program in cooperative development for the horticultural greenhouse Industry, Small Farm Institute, UMES.<br> |
