Maryland was a pioneer in the development of enterprise zones. It was the third state to enact its own enterprise zone program, and one of the first states to designate zones. It is estimated that, since the inception of the state's enterprise zone program, Maryland companies located in the zones have received more than $1 million in income tax credits for creating more than 2,000 new jobs. According to the estimates, local governments granted approximately $3 million in property tax credits last year for new investment in real property in the zones. State officials estimate that more than $200 million in real property improvements have been made in the enterprise zones since the program was created.
